As for our own safety

Please be careful out there, especially out on the crowded, narrow Trinity Trail. As we are all aware, we see more accidents out on the trail than anywhere else. I have seen and heard of more serious crashes out on that trail than in the C race out at the Wednesday Night Crits.

When riding as a group (paceline) use the proper hand signals, point out and call out (Don't Scream) any hazards that may be in front of you.

If you see something up in front that may be a hazard, move over slowly and give plenty of time for the others to react also. Do not come up on a hazard fast and jerk out of the way. This is going to throw the next person behind you directly into the path of what ever hazard and could most likely end up in a crash.

Use good paceline tactics. When the trail is crowded or on a busy road with no shoulder, ride single file. I see to many near misses. When riding a fast paceline and if you see people taking up to much of the path in front of you, Slow Down and pass with caution. Don't zip around them and surprise the next rider behind you with an immediate obstacle. Give everyone time to react. Much of the time the person behind you cannot see in front of you and will not have time to react.

Pay attention to what is in front of you. If you have riders behind you, look back to check where they are located. Look behind you on both sides before you move over. Always be aware of where the other riders are.

Hold your line. Do not jerk side to side in line. Make slow movements. Try to hold no closer than 1 ft. off the persons wheel in front of you.

Try to ride on one side or the other of the persons wheel in front of you. In case you need to grab your brakes, you won't cram yourself into the wheel of the person in front of you.

Don't grab your brakes to hard. Feather your brakes lightly only when you have to.

If you are uneasy in a line, motion that you are going to move out and go to the back where you can draft at a distance that is comfortable for you.

Call out and point at any hazards on the path in front of you. Glass, sticks, holes, bottles, cans, road kill, crack, bump, bike-up, runner-up, walker-up, dog, car-up, car-back.

Practice these simple cycling etiquettes and we will all survive the trail and the road.
